Minimalist Beauty ft. Berlin Skin

There are a lot of "mom and pop" beauty brands arriving on the skincare scene – and that's a good thing. There's long been an untapped gap between the generic drugstore products with questionable potency and the uber luxury brands whose efficacy doesn't justify the price.

Beauty lines like Berlin Skin are filling the void with consciously crafted collections made with organic and sustainable ingredients. Their well-made products offer visible results given the small batch production and wildcrafted natural ingredient list.  Moreover, German-made recyclable MIRON glass jars protect the active ingredients and shelf-life testing guarantees longevity, quality, and safety.

Berlin Skin made its debut like many of our favorite minimalist brands – via a successful Kickstarter campaign. The founder, Monica Watson, was motivated by her personal struggle with breakouts and unpredictable skin that threatened her career as a model.

The name behind the brand speaks to Monica's heritage: both her mother and grandmother – who are from Berlin, Germany – gave her a wealth of knowledge on how to properly care for and nourish her skin. She used their tips (particularly her grandmother's "less is more" approach) to create the different formulations in the launch collection.

The current collection is made up of three products available individually or as a set in full or travel sizes:

A silky, gentle and deeply hydrating cleanser that removes makeup and refines pores without stripping the skin of its natural oils. It's made up of a unique combination of organic coconut oil, organic aloe vera, organic gotu kola, and wild geranium. Additionally it includes the aromatherapy benefits of cold-pressed lavender, lemon, chamomile, and sandalwood.

A calming antibacterial and anti-inflammatory mist that refreshes, regenerates, and soothes the skin. The plant-based ingredients are gentle and effective in rebuilding collagen. It also preps the skin to retain more moisture.

A luxurious, lightweight facial cream that clears, evens, and firms without clogging your pores. It's full of antioxidants and combats breakouts and fine lines. The blend of three different types of sandalwood are extremely anti-aging and moisturizing. Moreover lavender, sage, thyme, and turmeric reduce inflammation and normalize oil production.

We've been using the entire collection for over a week and can testify to the mildness of the formulations. The products are lightweight and have a subtle aroma that is quite therapeutic. As minimalists we appreciate that there are only three steps to the regimen, reducing the amount of time we need to spend fussing around in the morning or evening. Additionally, the packaging is an extra treat – worthy of full display on the bathroom counter.

Berlin Skin encourages a simple more content sense of well-being with a skincare routine that is nurturing and relaxing. It may be a small player in the behemoth beauty industry, but with its minimalist's sensibility, attention to detail, and focus on naturally derived efficacy, it's sure to carve out a loyal niche.
