Basics Series: Button Down Shirt
Back to Basics is an ongoing series focused on how to wear and where to buy the 50 most important – and perhaps only – items you need in your wardrobe. Read the intro here.
Oversized white cotton button down shirt.
There is no other wardrobe essential you'll depend on more than this quintessential classic.
This is the epitome of a year-around wear-anywhere staple. If you've been considering a daily uniform this would be one of the easiest pieces to build your look on.
The styling possibilities are endless. I prefer an oversized tunic with wide easy-to-roll-up sleeves (pockets are a plus). I usually pair with skinny black jeans and a leather backpack or tote.
To keep my shirt bright and white I wear natural mineral deodorant to avoid yellow underarm stains. I wash in hot water with other white cottons or linens and hang dry. I don't mind a bit of wrinkle but have a steamer handy if needed.
